Nobels ODR-1 BC Overdrive
The Nobels ODR-1 is a legendary overdrive pedal often refered to as the "Nashville overdrive", the "Nashville secret weapon" or the "other green" overdrive.
The ODR-1 is very different sonically from the other famous green overdrive, the Ibanez Tube Screamer. Where the Tube Screamer sound is based around a pronounced mid-hump, the ODR-1 is a much more flat frequency response overdrive and boost, even though you can dial in a mid hump should you wish to.
The Nobels ODR-1 is also available as a ODR-1 Limited Edition sparkle Green.
Nashville secret weapon" overdrive
Legendary Nashville session guitar player Tom Bukovac discovered the ODR-1 and it instantly became his favorite overdrive. He started to tell all the other great Nashville session players about it, coining the frase "secret weapon" overdrive, and it quickly became the "Nashville favorite" overdrive. The ODR-1 is not only a Nashville favorite, it's very much a session players favorite, exemplified by the fact that great LA based session guys and producers like Tim Pierce and John Shanks will not go into a session or on tour without an ODR-1.
Design
The ODR-1 was designed by Kai Tachibana in 1991-92. Kai had an old Fender Bassman and loved the sound of it cranked and how interactive the volume pot on his guitar was with it. So he set out to design an overdrive pedal that would have these characteristics.
This was achieved by a number of really clever design features, among others the ODR-1 has a FET input stage dnd a direct coupling design, so no coupling capacitor on the input; very much inspired by the way tube amps are designed. It also has top and bottom end filters placed before the overdrive circuit, and uses both soft and hard clipping diodes to achieve a uniform overdrive range.
The ODR-1's tonestack or Spectrum control is also really cleverly designed. Where most pedals tone control is only affecting the top end, the Spectrum control affects the top end and the lower mids of the ODR-1. So with the Spectrum at noon the ODR-1 has a flat frequency curve. Turn the Spectrum control clockwise to increase top end and lower mids, or turn the Spectrum control anti-clockwise to reduce top end and lower mids resulting in a mid-hump.
